The 25 Arizona design celebrates the mysteries of the Lost Dutchman Mine in the Superstition Mountains, one of the most visually stunning regions of the state. Rising dramatically from the desert floor east of Phoenix, the Superstition Mountains form a rugged volcanic wilderness of sheer cliffs, hidden canyons, and twisted rock formations that have inspired both wonder and dread for centuries. The Apache people considered these mountains sacred and dangerous, believing them haunted by spirits and thunder gods, while Spanish conquistadors and later American prospectors saw only the promise of legendary gold deposits hidden within the labyrinthine canyons. In the design of the 25 Arizona Goldback Gold Note, the female allegory representing Tenacity explores the Lost Dutchman Mine. The mine represents perhaps America’s most enduring treasure legend, allegedly discovered in the 1870s by German immigrant Jacob Waltz (mistakenly called “the Dutchman”), who supposedly found fabulously rich gold deposits in the Superstition Mountains but took the mine’s exact location to his grave in 1891. Waltz’s cryptic deathbed directions have inspired more than a century of frantic searching, with countless prospectors, adventurers, and dreamers combing the treacherous peaks based on conflicting clues, mysterious maps, and dubious secondhand accounts.
