The design of this 2 Arizona Goldback celebrates the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition to the Grand Canyon. In May 1869, John Wesley Powell and nine companions launched four wooden boats from Green River, Wyoming, embarking on a perilous three-month journey through uncharted canyons of the Colorado River system that would culminate in the first documented passage through the Grand Canyon. The expedition faced capsized boats, lost supplies, treacherous rapids, and dwindling rations, with three men ultimately choosing to abandon the journey just days before its completion, only to be killed after leaving the canyon. The design of the 2 Arizona Goldback Gold Note features the allegory representative of Exploration floating in a wooden boat down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. In the distant background, you’ll notice Major Powell in his own wooden boat on the expedition. A Civil War veteran who lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh, John Wesley Powell became one of America’s most influential explorers, geologists, and ethnologists of the 19th century, driven by an insatiable curiosity about the unexplored Western territories.
